Migraine

Many people don’t realize how life-altering migraines can be until they begin to interfere with work, family time, or daily routines. What starts as an occasional disruption can become a recurring struggle, leaving individuals searching for answers and lasting relief.

Migraines are a complex neurological condition that can affect every part of life. Attacks often involve throbbing pain, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light or sound and sometimes visual changes known as aura. Migraine is the second leading cause of years lived with disability worldwide. With proper personalized treatment, however, migraines can be effectively managed and do not have to disrupt daily life.

Migraines often occur alongside anxiety and other mood symptoms, making collaboration between care providers essential. At Salma Health, our neurologists and psychiatric clinicians work as one team to ensure your care is fully connected and supports both your brain and emotional wellbeing.

Common Symptoms

Common migraine symptoms include:

  • Moderate to severe throbbing or pulsating head pain
  • Pain on one or both sides of your head
  • Sensitivity to light, sound, or smells
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Visual disturbances such as flashing lights, blind spots, or zigzag lines
  • Difficulty concentrating or speaking during an attack

Our Diagnostic Process

At Salma Health, our diagnostic process focuses on precision to ensure that we identify the migraine type and potential triggers to best target your treatment. We adjust each treatment based on your individual response, side effects and how each therapy fits into your daily life to ensure that your plan remains both effective and sustainable over time. We focus on precision so your plan targets the right migraine type and triggers.

Clinical evaluation
Detailed history of attacks, patterns, triggers and prior treatments, plus a focused neurological exam.

Rule out secondary causes
Assessment for warning signs that may require additional testing.

Targeted diagnostics when indicated
Advanced imaging or labs to exclude other causes. For complex cases we can use 3T MRI with advanced analysis and expert neuroradiology review.

Treatment Options

Our approach combines precise evaluation with personalized medication strategies to relieve symptoms and prevent recurrence.

  • Advanced diagnostics: We use state-of-the-art technology to accurately identify the source of your headaches and track your response to treatment. This may include:
    • 3 Tesla (3T) MRI with advanced volumetric analysis to measure and track brain structures with exceptional accuracy.
    • High-resolution neuroimaging reviewed by expert neuroradiologists.
    • Additional targeted testing, as needed, to rule out underlying causes and refine your treatment plan.
  • Medication management: Our specialists develop a personalized medication plan to relieve your symptoms quickly and reduce the frequency of future migraines.
    • Acute medications, also referred to as abortive or as-needed treatment, are chosen to stop migraines once they begin, while preventive options help to minimize how often they occur and how severe they become.
    • Prophylactic (preventive) medications reduce how often migraines occur and lessen severity
    • Treatment plans are continually adjusted based on your individual response, side effects and lifestyle needs
  • Botox® for chronic migraine: For patients with chronic migraine (15+ headache days per month), FDA approved Botox injections are administered every 12 weeks. Botox works by targeting overactive pain pathways in the head and neck, helping to significantly reduce the number of monthly migraine days.
  • Nerve blocks: In some cases, targeted nerve block injections can provide relief by numbing overactive nerves that contribute to headache pain. These can be especially useful with certain migraine patterns or those not responding to other treatments.
  • CGRP monoclonal antibodies: New injectable therapies called CGRP inhibitors (such as erenumab, fremanezumab or galcanezumab) can help prevent migraines by blocking the calcitonin gene-related peptide pathway, which is central to migraine attacks. These are given as self-administered or in-office injections once a month.

We adjust each treatment based on your individual response, side effects and how each therapy fits into your daily life to ensure that your plan remains both effective and sustainable over time.

Frequently asked questions

What types of migraines do you treat?

We evaluate and treat the full spectrum of migraines, including migraine with aura, migraine without aura, chronic migraine, and post-traumatic migraine. We also treat related headache disorders when migraines overlap with cluster headaches, or other conditions.

How do I know if my headaches are migraines?

Migraines typically present as throbbing or pulsating pain, often on one side of the head, and may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light, sound, or smells. Some people also experience visual disturbances (aura) before the pain begins. A detailed evaluation is the best way to confirm whether your headaches are migraines.

What can I expect at my first visit to Salma Health for migraines?

Your first visit includes a comprehensive discussion of your symptoms, triggers, and medical history. We’ll perform a neurological exam and, if indicated, order imaging or lab tests to rule out underlying causes. Before you leave, we’ll design a personalized care plan focused on both immediate relief and long-term prevention.

Do I need imaging or lab tests for migraines?

Not always. Many migraines can be diagnosed through a clinical evaluation alone. Imaging, such as MRI or lab testing, is only recommended if your symptoms are atypical, worsening, or linked to other neurological concerns.

Do lifestyle changes really make a difference?

Yes. Adjustments to sleep, hydration, posture, diet, and stress management can significantly reduce migraine frequency and severity. These strategies are integrated into every care plan we develop.

How quickly will I feel better?

It depends on the type and severity of your migraines and which treatments are used. Some patients feel relief within days, while others experience gradual improvement over weeks to months as preventive strategies take effect.

Do you coordinate care with my other doctors?

Yes. We believe in collaborative care. With your permission, we’ll share findings and treatment plans with your primary care provider, pain specialist, or other relevant clinicians.
